The definition and application of lumens

Bywpx_ November 18, 2024

LED headlights are rated in lumens, yet most individuals lack a clear understanding of what lumens truly represent. It is likely that many are eager to uncover the answer. Let us delve further into the concept of lumens. It is a common knowledge that lighting fixtures are typically labeled with their light output, measured in lumens. Evidently, lumens quantify the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source.

Why LED lighting is measured in Lumen

Measuring the brightness of light is more crucial than measuring its power consumption. Traditional incandescent light bulbs are quantified in watts, reflecting the amount of power they utilize; typically, higher wattage corresponds to brighter light. However, in the current landscape of energy-efficient lighting alternatives, higher wattage does not necessarily equate to brighter light unless employing the same type of bulbs. This underscores the rationale behind using lumens as the unit of measurement for LED lighting.

How does Lumen compare to Watt?

Lumens and watts quantify distinct aspects, thus direct comparison between them is not feasible. Nevertheless, one can approximate the lumens output of a specific wattage bulb. For instance, a 100-watt incandescent bulb typically yields approximately 1600 lumens. In the realm of LEDs, a 26-watt bulb can generate an equivalent lumen output.

In the automotive industry, people typically use lux meters to measure lumens. It can gauge the lumens of all areas of a headlight bulb. Lux is related to lumens. One lux equals one lumen per square meter. LED lighting differs from traditional incandescent bulbs. You might come across descriptions like “60-watt equivalent LED bulb.” But in reality, it only uses around 9.5 watts. This is because LEDs are measured in lumens. The brightness of a 40-watt incandescent bulb is about 450 lumens. A 60-watt incandescent bulb shines at 800 lumens. We can grasp that more watts mean brighter light, while fewer watts imply dimmer light.
